When a colleague introduced this material to me, I thought that there would be "no way" I would use this in a middle school language arts classroom. However, after watching a fellow teacher use this unorthodox methodology -- there is no text, and students have to take copious notes I was surprised at the organizational skills they developed. Unlike traditional grammar which is taught in isolation, students learn to dissect the whole sentence as well as learn the function of the parts of speech both at the same time. Teachers must encourage students to approach Stevenson with an open mind and it must be taught for 30 minutes daily. I was pleased and suprised at how well, low achievers were able to compose simple, compound, and complex sentences. This was something I did not have much success with when using the textbook. At the end of the year, students take their notebooks with them. Because of the very nature of the student putting his own the notebook together, it is usually well organized. To the teacher using this material for the first time, spend the summer before getting acquainted with this material. I highly recommend this book and the student materials to teachers who cannot get low achievers to write or to make sense of their own writing.
