This is a wonderful book on stellar evolution and the structure of the galaxy. It is full of the insights of an astronomer who was in love with her subject. There is no mathematics in the book, but it requires close reading and attention to the figures and data tables to get the full benefit of the arguments. It assumes a background equivalent to a good introductory college course in astronomy. This book and Bart Bok's book _The Milky Way_ are two of the best introductions to the subject of stellar evolution and the structure of the galaxy if you want more than hand waving arguments and pretty pictures but want to avoid the mathematics. My only complaint about the book is the dismal quality of the reproductions of the black and white photos of the star clusters. Don't let the low used price fool you into thinking this neglected classic is not worth buying. It is a shame that Cecelia Payne-Gaposchkin's books seem to be going out of print.
