THE MARK OF TROUBLE

This is a DD western from the pen of T.V. Olsen written in 1973 to portray the relationship between two brothers and their attempt to move from a farm life in Ohio to the rough, brasada of Texas. The Civil War has ended, a war that Perry the older brother fought in, and one that the younger brother Jeb was too young to join. Attempting to establish themselves in this brasada area they are not up to the physical as well as practical issues involved, immediately getting into serious trouble trespassing on Spanish Land Grant range. The story picks up steam from there carrying on through 185 pages of interesting reading. And the ending pretty much suits or matches the story that goes before. It is a story of brotherly love and eventual brotherly distance and dislike, a story of love: love of open range and ranching, love of two men for two women, one anglo the other Mexican. It is a story of depth describing the requirements of the time for the dangerous business of brasada-brush popping work involving very dangerous long horned maverick cattle. I read many westerns and found this one from a generation ago one that still read both smoothly and quickly. Though Mr. Olsen is deceased his many writings on the fictional west are mostly gems that still hold up today, with some of his being true classics: THE STALKING MOON being one and A MAN NAMED YUMA another. So if a reader enjoys this one from Theodore V. Olsen, he or she can rest assured that there are many more yet remaining. Semper Fi.
