This book begins the Spoken Standard Chinese series, which emphasizes natural dialogue and familiarity with a modern, adult vocabulary. Book One uses pinyin romanization and no Chinese characters. An accompanying audio program is available.
Yes, unfortunately, because this series is excellent and one of the best for detailed explanations of Chinese grammar. The exercises are plentiful; the examples are all encompasing; the dialogs are realistic and multiplicitous; the grammatical explanations are most descriptive. The unfortunate thing is that the audio recordings are not available. Too bad the texts are still available less an important complement of the recordings. I find I don't need other supplemental materials for this text except for audio of my other texts to improve my listening skills. My wife is Chinese and she fills the gaps to improve my listening skills, but really wish Yale (or some other entity) would make available the audio for this series. With some updates, this text could be very useful to colleges, high schools, and the self-taught learner. 5 stars for this one!!
