Solid Fun

As a fan of Ringo I might be a bit bias, but I thought this was a great story. The artwork is wonderful and the colors are very vibrant. The story itself is a fun adventure and of course features The Fantastic Four and Spidey. What's not to love?

Spidey and Marvel's First Family do The Impossible!

For anyone familiar with Jeff Parker, you know he's the writer of such titles as Agents Of Atlas, X-Men: First Class, Exiles, and the current iteration of Thunderbolts. For this romp of a Spidey/Fantastic Four team-up, he's accompanied by the late, great Mike Wieringo! I would recommend this trade to anyone who wants to read a self-contained, lighthearted, humorous, whacky and witty superhero story. The Thing and Johnny Storm provide plenty of one-liners but there's also the rivalry between Spidey and Johnny and Jeff Parker excels here. Of course Sue is left to referee while Reed does the problem solving. The basic plot is that a strange alien comes to Earth in the middle of New York and is impervious to any attack (trust me, The Thing, Torch and Spidey give it the ole college try). This alien, The Imperator it calls itself, is able to blithely ignore our heroes--despite everything they try--he stands immobile and unimpressed. It seems to be building some kind of machine in Central Park and this machine seems to be turning everyone in the world into strange alien beings; supplanting their humanity and indoctrinating everyone into some kind of hive-mind! (Readers of Cable/Deadpool Vol. 1: If Looks Could Kill might see some similarities between concepts.) When all hope seems lost, The Impossible Man appears out of nowhere!! Of course, the humor gets ratcheted up ten notches with his arrival (seems he piggybacked a ride on The Imperator's spacecraft?). Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, The Impossible Man and a mysterious alien; a would-be Earth conquering powerhouse (with a funny name)! Need I say more? No! This stuff writes itself... Well actually, Jeff Parker just makes it look easy. But this was the kind of stuff Parker was seemingly born to write. With Mike (Ringo!) Wieringo handling the art (miss this guy), it's a wonder to look at too. If you're not familiar with Mike Wieringo, he did have a creator owned project through Image (with collaborator Todd Dezago on writing chores) called Tellos and he also partnered up with Mark Waid on some critically acclaimed runs of The Flash, Impulse and Fantastic Four (more recently with Peter David on Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man). Wieringo had one of those rare styles that blended realism (anatomy, proportion, character expression) with cartoony (incredible kinetic action and dynamic layouts). His line work was so fluid and clean too. I would compare him to Art Adams, stylistically (but I like Ringo better!). This mini series was originally published just after Civil War had "shaken the foundation of The Marvel Universe to it's core!", so chances are it got skipped by a lot of readers who were swept up in the craze of that particular event book. It's a shame. This collection is a good time, any time. No research required. For Spidey fans, or fans of the Spidey/FF dynamic, this trade is a can't lose proposition. 'Nuff said!
