When I first read this book, in 1979, I frequently paused to throw back my head and laugh out loud. It is that funny - wry, dry humor woven into an insider's cynical, disillusioned view of Paris and its denizens. My first copy became dog-eared from several readings over the next years ... whenever I needed a boost, I could open it at random and lose myself in the surreal experiences of the "bunny-toothed" au pair from Cincinnati. Unfortunately, I lent it to a friend and it was never returned; I subsequently spent a number of pre-internet years searching used bookstores in vain for this out-of-print treasure. But now, thanks to the miracle of online shopping, I own two (count'em!) gently-used copies of this book. Reading it again after a 20-year hiatus, I was relieved to confirm that my original instincts were correct - and that it has lost none of its original appeal. Highly recommended to those free spirits who appreciate dry humor and a whirl through Europe.
An American Girl in Paris

Wish this one were still in print. It's a delightful story about a fed-up young woman from Ohio who impulsively decides to stay on in Paris after her European vacation has ostensibly ended. She gets a job as an au pair caring for the French Bad Seed... and the story manages to be both laugh-out-loud funny and heart-tugging. Gallagher's other books are worth a look too, but this one's a real gem.
