Keeps you reading. Got my 10 yr old to start reading more.

Spellfire was the first book of the second series of DND novels that I picked up decades ago. The first was The Crystal Shard. I enjoyed these books so much that I am getting my children to read them now. All of my children are great trades except one and this book got him reading now I can’t order books fast enough. It’s a tale about an ordinary girl that discovers some extraordinary powers and all that’s goes along with them. There is some romance between the characters but nothing a mature child can’t handle.

The 2nd best book in the trilogy.

This book starts out like another trilogy I can remember. It reads like a page by page record of a Dungeons and Dragons game with a little story peppered in here and there, which is not all that bad really. Ed Greenwood has a literary style that is quite different from most other authors I can think of. It's strangely different, but it holds my attention and keeps me reading more. I can't really explain it any better. He's a storyteller, a bard, and he has the gift that draws me in and holds me there. Oh, and that other trilogy was the Dragonlance series: Dragons of Autumn Twilight or something... I thought the fighting, action and magic (spellfire) were all well-done. Some of the kissy-kissy sequences between Narm and Shandril were a little annoying, but this book really evoked scenes of another world, filled with magic and creatures and all sorts of items, and I felt like I could actually see the things Ed Greenwood was writing about. It was colorfully written, with plenty of amusing dialogue between the characters, as well as lots of magic (spellfire) and swordplay. Definitely worth rereading, and I will someday.

A great book to start out with...

I have read some of the other reviews and I am very confused why it got SO many bad reviews. This is a great book. It was my first Forgotten Realms books and I chose it at the time because it was a "stand-alone" book. I was instantly hooked. This is a great story of a no-body girl who discovers great power within herself. Talk about fantasy! Becuase of this book, I have discovered an entire realm of books and stories from Ed Greenwood, who is one of my favorite writters. I am currently reading Crown of Fire and it's even better. Can't wait for Hand of Fire to get into my hands. Thanks Ed for the great stories.

15 year old bookworm's review

This book is really good, if you like the stories of people leaving for adventure, and then finding its not what they thought it was. The characters are strong, and there is quite a bit of wry humor in here, nothing inappropriate when it comes to the humor. All in all, I say you NEED to read this book.

The name is NARM...........you Witch!

This was the very first Forgotten Realms book I read. And to tell you the truth, I did enjoy it. It is a tale of Shan finding her internal gift. Almost like Neo finally realizing that he was the "the one" in the Matrix. Even though many people will put down this book and attempt to dismiss the love tale within, it. Other will enjoy it like me and read it more than once. I still have my copy way back from the early 90's. I suggest you purchase this book for yourself, you will enjoy it.

A book that captures your attention.

I truely enjoyed the book. Ed kept me indulged in the book. I couldn't hardly put it down. The way that Ed describes Shadril's powers, and even how she came across them is interesting. If you love medieval stories, this is a good one to buy!! I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to read about the Realms.
