Explaining the Test Requirements

Special Agent Deputy U.S. Marshal, Eve Steinberg This 1996 book prepares you for the Treasury Enforcement Agent test. These Special Agents work for the Customs Service, the Internal Revenue Service, the Secret Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. The `Foreword' by John W. Warner Jr. says the Treasury Department is in the forefront of the fight against crime on a national level (p.v). He explains the tasks of each bureau. `Part One' lists the Law Enforcement Careers with the BATF, and explains their work. The IRS collects taxes in a fair and impartial manner. The Customs Service is the government's major revenue producer. The Secret Service is the oldest general law enforcement agency of the federal government. [There is no mention here of its original role of counter-intelligence from 1861 to the 1930s when FDR reassigned this task to the FBI.] The Marshals Service is the oldest federal law enforcement function (since 1789). They are both officers of the federal courts and law enforcement agents of the Executive Branch. `Part Two' describes Federal Law Enforcement Training. The techniques of criminal investigation are basic to all the services (p.39). Typical courses are described (pp.46-55) `Part Three' provides sample questions for the Treasury Enforcement Agent Exam. There are Verbal Reasoning questions, Arithmetic Reasoning questions, and Problems for Investigation. [These examples can test the reasoning skills of the general reader.] `Part Four' explains the skills and strategies for the TEA Exam: verbal reasoning (pp.137-150), and arithmetic reasoning (pp.151-195). There are four sample Problems for Investigation (pp.196-207). Fans of mystery novels, true crime, and the police dramas on TV will benefit from reading this book to better understand what you read or view.
