The best semi-technical overview of the global human biome.

"Space Biospheres" was the manifesto of the Biosphere II project written by the intellectual founders. Despite the hyperbole and eventual failure by their less competant followers, this is the best summary of the global human biome accessible to general science readers. This book reveals, among other startling facts, that the water of life comes from earth's position as a micro-comet collector and that 90% of the cells in your body are non-human. It is worth memorizing just for cocktail conversation, but it has far greater value. Ecology is the nexial point at which natural science is capable of making predictions of the final outcome human actions, as calculus is to mathematics. I consider this book essential for understanding our place and living an ethical life. The message of the book is that we need to understand all the links in our circular chain of life before we execute space travel and colonization. I feel that this culmination of Western Science's dividing the world finer like Democritus and Linneaus brings us around to an unescapably wholistic philosophy like Buddhism and Native American religion. Although the authors do not have the style or commercial instincts of a Carl Sagan, I rank this book on my top shelf with the Bible, the Koran, Isaac Newton and Richard Feynman.
