Following a failed pregnancy, Oliver and Abby learn they will never be able to bear children of their own. Heartbroken, their marriage in decay, the couple exhaust the last of their savings and move house from London to a tiny village on the remote Isle of Man for a fresh start.

Settling into a small stone cottage beside a dark woods overlooking a gray sea, their best of intentions are only too quickly dashed by cold, suffocating fog, thrashing wind and rain, and the strange folkloric traditions of the villagers themselves, including a congregation of old rusted horseshoes arranged in a crude pattern of concentric circles on their front door to greet them and mysterious runic carvings on the stone walls of their cellar.
