Sorby's Legacy: Geology at the University of Sheffield

Henry Clifton Sorby was a brilliant Victorian polymath who pioneered research in many scientific spheres. In particular he was intrigued by the geology near his home in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Sorby died in 1908, leaving a substantial legacy to the University of Sheffield for the purpose of setting up a department for the study of geology. This book traces the history of the Geology Department from the early years, through its successful expansion to world-wide recognition and finally to the unfortunate circumstances which led to closure in 2001. Many images, from both the University's archives and those submitted by former staff and students are included.A short account of the Centenary Reunion held in 2013 and a note of geology related courses still available at the University are recorded.
