Early on, 'Sonya & Jack' (1995) feels like a light-hearted romance, with the two protagonists searching for a place to live in Depression-era Chicago. Author Homel seems just as concerned with language play and describing comical scenes as he does with plot and character development. As the novel progresses, however, Homel takes the reader on a surprisingly deep journey through Stalinist Russia in the 1930s as Sonya and Jack try to find a better life than what they had in the U.S. Rich in history and characterization, this novel leaves you feeling nostalgic for a livelier world gone by.
