Moving and disturbing

Set in Brooklyn the story centres on Aaron, sixteen years old, inexperienced, and troubled by his attraction to other boys. Sha is five years older, street wise and fully at ease with himself, and while he too likes other boys, and has had plenty of experience, he has not found that special person, someone he can love. But when he encounters Aaron he thinks he may just be that one, and they embark on a stormy relationship with Aaron unable to come to terms with his feelings. It is bound to end in tragedy. This relatively short novel superbly captures the mood of the two very different underprivileged boys, and the torment their relationship causes. Aaron's predicament is especially well portrayed as he struggles with his conscience and hates what he sees he could become. Sons is a beautifully written, moving and at times disturbing story.

Inspirational and Moving!!!

I'd been told recently that this book was amazing, and I was not let down. I loved the descriptive nature and it's spot on characterization of many of the attitudes and even swagger of black gay men in this city. It inspired me to share more of my life with others and continue the inspiration!

Intrigued

When I observed the cover of the book, I was hesitant to read it because it might be what I expected, but it turned out that it's good and I could related to what the writer was saying about the characters in the book.

I related to it

It amazed me how I, a midlle aged white man who grew up in a small town could have had a very very similar experience as Aaron, a black male growing up in Brooklyn in this book. I really enjoyed the book since the author talks at length about the feelings each character is going thru and I related as these are the same feelings I have experienced in my life. A wonderful book!!

The Review

I've heard about this book for awhile now but only recently did I go and buy it (again at Harlemade...lol) and what a wonderful read. Kudos to Mr. Morgan for an engaging coming of age story that captured all the angst that one experiences in regards to their sexuality and that transition from boy to man. Its a great story with a backdrop of Brooklyn, characters that the reader can relate to, and as I read it I was reminded of the movie "Crash" as the part I read made me think of not just the book but how in life there is that intersection where we all connect.
