Above Average Tales of a Lesser Known Howard Character

This book contains three Robert E. Howard tales: "Blood of the Gods," "The Country of the Knife," and "Son of the White Wolf." The latter two were published in 1936 following Howard's death. They are essentially desert epics featuring the character of Francis X. Gordon, an American who was known as El Borak. El Borak adventured about Kurdistan, Turkey, and Afghanistan. The stories appear to take place fairly contemporaneously with Howard's life, even though El Borak frequently swings a pretty mean sword. Still, he also managed to carry a gun much of the time. The stories are fast paced and filled with action, typical REH work. Of course, what's typical for REH would be above average for most other writers. REH was truly the king of the pulps and produced an unbelievable amount of work in a relatively short time. for anyone who follows REH, this is a must have. "The Country of the Knife," in particular, is a great story. Roy Thomas liked it well enough to adapt it into a Conan story.

ANOTHER LITTLE KNOWN HOWARD CHARACTER

The White Wolf, AKA Francis Xavier Gordon was one of Howard's lesser known characters. Not a fantasy character in the vein of Conan, Kull, or Bran Mak Morn, Gordon was one of Howard's Historical adventure heroes.Historical adventure was one of Howards favorite genres and he created stories clearly influenced by writers such as Burroughs, Mundy, and others.Gordon was an American adventurer who stars in several short stories taking place primarily in the middle east. Arabs were one of Howard's favorite villians, even in Conan stories where Egypt becomes Stygia.Gordon is a hard-punching, quick-shooting character, similar I would Say to the Brendan Fraser Character in the Mummy movies. the stories take place roughly circa the 20's and 30's when these lands were still roughly untamed. They're quick, action packed tales. If all you know about Howard is Conan, you'd do well to tray and dig up this and other books of his lesser known creations. Good stuff.
