Samples of the work of the beloved master of Yiddish literature
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
Sholom Aleichem spoke as a writer for and to a whole culture, that of the poor religious Jews of Eastern Europe. He understood their yearnings and their troubles, and created a whole cast of characters who represented faithfully a part of the world of the Eastern European Shtetl. Aleichem also wrote of the Jewish immigrants to America, though here his writing had a slightly more bitter touch. This work contains a sample of his work, divided by the editor and translator Curt Leviant into the following categories: Holiday Tales, Romance, Jewish Children, Monologue, Railroad Yarns, Kasrilevke Characters, Satire, From America. This anthology provides an excellent sample of a writer who did move to laughter and tears so many of a world now gone.
