Book Overview

Excerpt from Some Early Notices of the Herrick Family: A Paper Read Before the Leicestershire Architectural and Archaeological Society

It is not generally known that one of the sons of Sir William Hoyrick, Knight, the purchaser of Benumanor, emigrated to America, and founded a family thero. This was Henry Hoyrick, liis fifth son, who was boru at Beaumanor, August lGth, 1G04, and namod Henry by command of Prince llenry, his godparents being Sir David Murray, Mr. John Spilman, and Lady Aston. Many hundreds of his descendants, in every sphere of life, are now to be found in America; and an account of them was published nearly forty years ago by General Jedidiuh Herrick. A new edition of this work being now in course of preparation by Dr. L. C. Herrick, of Columbus, Ohio, this gentleman lately wrote and requested me to assist him iu his effort to elucidate the early Pedigree of the Family. I have therefore made somewhat prolonged searches in the Probate Courts, the Hall Books of the Corporation of Leicester, and various Parish Registers; the result beiug that a great deal of information hitherto unknown has been brought to light. A portion of this I now have the pleasure to bring before the Society's notice, merely promising that what is here given has not yet been published, either in Nichols' Leicestershire or elsewhere. It throws great light upon the early history of the Herrick Family.
