This is a stunning collection of stories - especially for a first effort. McCloskey's ability to get inside the lives of her characters simply and cleanly is artful, clever and expert. The stories read fluidly and are of a very manageable size (kudos there too). Her prose is simply beautiful - but never overwrought. She has a keen ability to turn a phrase, which is delightfully exhibited in the stories - but this card is not overplayed. It is in the author's choices of subject, setting and tone - her restraint and utter fearlessness and honesty that make this book such a fine read. Each story captures an inevitability - in many cases a hopeful, yet bittersweet one - that makes the book informative in a universal sense. This is writing for grownups. I must say that this was not an easy book to read - nor to put down: there are some disturbing subjects dealt with here - but there is also joy and sentiment and light-heartedness as well, owing to a fine balancing act achieved by the author. And great writing. Wholly contrary to the prior review, I heartily recommend this book and this writer (plus her others: "The Beautiful Changes," "Protection") - especially if you are willing to look into the abyss of everday life.
