Solid: The Authority of God's Word

The attack has been renewed once again. The same issues today have been settled many times over the centuries. Because the question is being resurrected again, it is necessary to restate the nature of biblical authority. 'Solid' states the case for the inerrancy of Scripture, which is the only consistent approach to Biblical authority. In addition to the apologetic benefit of the book, practical implications are presented for Christian faith and life...

Good but lacking

The intended audience for this book is not one who doubts Christ, but one who believes that faith can exist without a belief in the Bible's supremacy. There are many people I have known who fall into this category. Our contemporary churches are full of them, socially just churches and universal churches and all kinds of heresies trying to appease modern audiences or temper the sometimes unfriendly and demanding God. Those who say, "I will acknowledge that Jesus was God, sure, no big deal, but that fact doesn't really touch me." Those "Let me decide what's important" or "I don't think that teaching applies any more" folks, who have swallowed our contemporary "You need to figure it out for yourself without the influence of dusty old books" mantra "believers." Of course, no one thinks in a vacuum, and those figuring it out are going to have, as the author points out, the influences of this decayed and depraved culture infiltrating and intoxicating their thought. Jesus believed in the absolute truth of the Old Testament. He quoted from it frequently. He assumed his audience would be familiar with it. He demonstrated its superiority to tradition. He took it seriously. In a world where celebrity endorsements are worth millions, what better endorsement could you want? We don't know what brand of pop Jesus drank, or what kind of car he drove, but we do know what kind of teaching he studied. maybe we should emulate Him? A brief book such as this will not remove all doubts. But it skillfully and succinctly captures a number of threads and weaves them into a useful volume. Need to get your face back into your Bible? Read this to be assured that it is where you should be. Need to get a "believer" to actually act upon their beliefs? Well, this would be an excellent resource for that purpose. But for a non-believer, though some chapters address the authority and trustworthiness of the Bible, his arguments are too brief to be convincing. And a lack of a "For more on this topic, read this" is disappointing. A selected books list would have been very helpful.

Short But Great Work on Scripture

Dr. Jack Cottrell is one of my favorite theologians. One of the reasons I enjoy his works so much is that Dr. Cottrell will not shy away from taking on tough issues. In this short 124 page book, he writes in defense of the Bible being the solid authority for the Church of Jesus Christ. He writes with a strong conviction that the Bible is without error and is 100% the Word of God for the people of God. As you read this book you will be convinced that truly God has spoken (Hebrews 1:1-3) and the Bible is the God-breathed book (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
