Dodging Indian Curses: Five Generations of West Pointers

This is a great book for a quiet weekend. I have often wondered about the private thoughts of West Pointers who participated in many of the Indian Wars, the Trail of Tears relocations of the Cherokees, and the blatant treaty violations. This is a fictional work which addresses many of those points. Hawk's family background parallels his fictional characters. His knowledge of military lore and history fills the book with details and vignettes of military life. Was MacArthur *really* engaged to seven women at once? A braver man than generally known to history if that was the case!Need a gift? This is a good choice!
Understanding History

Soldiers Never Sleep is a well written, fascinating novel in the Michener model in that it weaves an interesting narrative around actual history with emphasis on the Indian Wars. However, much of the historical detail used in the novel is relatively unknown and is the result of the author's research and family files. It is, in many ways, a treatment of discrimination by the military towards blacks, women, Indians, and others, in furtherance of what were believed to be honorable goals. The book illuminates the essential conflicts among the insanity of war, selfless service, and personal ambition. Many readers will not agree with some of Hawk Kiefer's positions but that is not important. Not only is the book highly entertaining but it makes you think. I recommend it highly.
