Great book for MSCEs

Notice how all of the bad comments on this book come from people who really shouldn't have been reading it in the first place? The positive reviews reflect reality; this book is worth its weight in gold for newbies to the Solaris world. I highly recommend it.

Exactly what I was looking for

I am an NT Admin that has just been put on an NT/Solaris Network. This is exactly what an NT admintrator needs. It is not a very big book, but every page is necessary and useful. It goes through networking, script files, all the little config files you can never find and even NFS. I just wish I could keep it on my desk because everyone wants to read it!

Very helpful to start

I'm an NT guy who is trying to quickly pickup Solaris skills. I found that this book does what the cover says. I've leveraged my NT skills in to some Solaris knowledge. It's also a great book to flip though for information on the fly.Solaris Guide for Windows NT Administrators will give anyone with NT knowledge a start in Solaris. You'll be able to setup and troubleshoot the basics of a networked Sun computer. However, if you are interested in focusing on Solaris rather than just learning the basics (Network setup, DNS etc) then I would suggest this book plus something more. I'm finding Sobell's book to be a vertable goldmine.

Wish I'd had this 3 years ago!

I started migrating from NT work to SunOS & Solaris in 1996, due to the Internet boom, etc. It was a tough transition--this book would have saved me a lot of time. I've recommended it to an NT guy at work who's hoping to make the leap into Solaris work, he bought it and he is picking up stuff VERY quickly. As noted, the design is good: let someone look up a task based on what they know, then provide the "translation".

Really good for NT admins that want to learn Solaris

I think this book is great. It's format is like "this is how you do x in NT, this is the same thing in Solaris". Most Unix books are written for Unix experts. I recommend this book highly for MCSE type folks that want to learn Solaris. I am really hoping for a second edition that would cover advanced topics like shell scripting, performance tuning and monitoring, and security.
