In this third book in Robin Mitchell and Judith Steedman's popular Windy series, Snowy and Chinook are planning a birthday party for their friend Tulip on a cold winter morning. The puppet figures who tell the story, designed by the authors and photographed by Mia Cunningham, have a fresh and modern style. Clear, primary colours, charming line drawings, and simple text make this a fun book for the very young.
We have had this book less han a day and it already is a favorite with my 3 year old. Amazing creativity.....inspiring for young children to create their own scenes and characters. I will use this book with my preschoolers art class and the homeschoolers co-op. The CD also is amazing really works well with the mood of the story....adding more character to this little story. This is part of a new series collaboratively produced by Robin Mitchell and Judith Steedman- I hope we see many more! Read it on a snowy night, and wake to a pancake and hot chocolate breakfast. Simply Magical!

This is a small but wonderful book for young children. I am a speech therapist who has used all three of the books in this series with a class of kindergarteners. They absolutely love them! The pictures are so different from anything they have seen before. It got the children asking many questions about how the authors used paper, yarn, felt and other objects to create their scenes. The story is perfect for winter time. It is about 2 sisters who set off in the snow to find a present for their buffalo friend. They encouter many animals along the way who make some interesting suggestions. The book lends itself so nicely for discussion. We talked about each suggestion and why it was or was not good for a buffalo. This book, like the others in the series, includes a map of all the places the characters visit. The maps really helped my class of children with short term memory deficits remember the sequence of events. The back of the dust jacket includes a recipe for pancakes. My students enjoyed eating pancakes and drinking hot chocolate just like the characters did at the end. We were able to work on social language skills with our little book related party. I was able to work on so many speech and language goals with this book, I could write an entire page review!
