EXQUISITE illustrations, great retelling of an old classic

Every child needs to be exposed to beautiful literature and great art while they are young. It gives them an advantage when they begin to write, when the academic tests drill their vocabulary, and when they begin to appreciate culture in the world. This retelling of SNOW WHITE is true to the version told by the Brothers Grimm, and therefore never gives name to the dwarves or to the huntsman responsible for saving Snow White's life. Yet the words the author skillfully weaves together bring the story to life. My mom read this book to me when I was six years old, and it remains one of my favorites still. Susan Jeffers renders an authentic medieval flavor of northern Europe in each illustration. The costumes, food, and architecture all appear 13th or 14th century. Snow Whites world is revealed as magical and dangerous. I would generally recommend this book to children ages seven and up, with a warning to parents they may have to explain some unfamiliar words, such as "ebony" and "tongs". Parents should also be advised this is not a "Disney style" Snow White. The story, like many of Grimms' fairytales, may be somewhat violent at times, and may not be ideal for very sensitive children.
