GOOD TEACHING TOOL AND A FUN READ FOR THE KIDS

This is one book in a series of five books geared to teach children from preschool age through the first or second grade of the workings and importance of our five senses. This is a short (approximately 38 pages) scientific explanation of our sense of smell. It includes a very nice diagram of the nose and text suitable for the adult teacher to further the discussion as presented in the book. This diagram is detailed, but no so detailed that it will give the adult reader unfamiliar with anatomy any problems. The text consists of one sentence per page addressing the various way the sense of smell is use; to smell flowers, the cake, fresh from the oven, the smell of cows in a barn, Mommy's perfume, the smell of wood burning in a campfire and so on. Each example is accompanied by a wonderful illustration in watercolor which is quite detailed. The children, adults and background detailed in these paintings have almost a timeless quality; a European flavor...probably Italian. Each work of art presented here is quite pleasing to the eye and works perfectly with the text. This is an ideal book for the parent or teacher to use in leading a discussion on the sense of smell. There is not one page in this work that the instructor will not be able to get a lot of mileage from. This work was first published in 1983 and is still as useful to day as it was when it came off the press. Highly recommend this one and the rest of the books in this set...they are great teaching aids, fun to read, and the children love them. Don Blankenship The Ozarks
