This book is definitely not what you expect when you pick up a book by a missionary author. I have listened to Mrs. Loving in person and her delightful, "down to earth" manner comes across in the book. What Aretta has done in the pages of this volume is two weave the stories of her own experiences in the highlands of New Guinea and other like-minded individuals into a devotional book. Far from some dry "missionary" book, slices of life is a calm relaxed look at how simple every day events can teach us all something about the nature of God. No politcal grandstanding or moral platitudes, the "Slices" are a grandmothers reflections on a life of service and compassion for people who do not understand the message of the Christian faith. With a style more akin to a Piper devotional than a Spurgeon or Chambers, I would recommend it highly. A great gift for families with small children or people friends and relatives serving abroad.
