This initial collection of top columns by Chicago Newspaperman Mike Royko (1932-1997) is well worth reading. Royko had a knack for mixing humor and seriousness, as is clearly demonstrated by this early collection from the 1960's and early 1970's. Royko saw Chicago as somewhat rough and cynical, made up of little people, ruled partly by crooks, a troubled yet vibrant place to live. Royko was not impressed by power or position, he took on arrogance, charlatans, and stuffed shirts, and he displayed sympathy for stressed-out workers, minorities, drunks, little people, and anybody that got a raw deal. Royko used his alter ego Slats Grobnik to make serious points, all the while keeping his humorous touch. Readers might also enjoy other collections of Royko columns, including SEZ WHO SEZ ME, DR. KOOKIE, ONE MORE TIME, etc.
