an excellent introduction

So you have questions about stargazing but you don't know where to start? Look no further than this excellent guide. "Skywatching" begins by discussing the interesting history behind astronomy. The history is given a thorough treatment but is not overly done. The author includes just enough to build on the fascination we already have as attested by purchasing this book. I believe the most valuable part of this book is the main content which names and explains all of the constellations and points out neighboring celestial objects... many of which are visible to the naked eye or binoculars. One of the interesting things I've learned about this fascinating hobby is that you don't need to run out and buy a $2,000.00 telescope to enjoy it. Armed with this book, a plainesphere (star map) and an inquisitive mind you have more than enough to get started and to continue a lifelong hobby whether you plain to get very serious about it or just remain a closet astronomer.

Plenty of information, detailed illustrations

I just bought this book and found it very easy to read, as well as helpful with using my brand new telescope. It starts off by giving a very entertaing general history of astronomy, with plenty of illustrations. It then covers astronomy concepts, such as star types, azimuth, etc. Also included is a section on telescopes. Then it has 12 or so full scale maps of the sky, for every time of the year in both southern and northern hemispheres. The best section is the constellation section. It has at least one page for each constellation, with a map showing a detalied view of it and surrounding stars/clusters/galaxies. It gives the history of the constellation, other interesting objects to look for nearby, and a photograph showing what the constellation really looks like (without the lines connecting the stars). Very helpful.

one word - "AWESOME"

This is a wonderful book. It is very informative and very good for the amateur astronomer. I personally have learned a great deal from this book. No matter how many times I sit down and look at it, it never gets old. Has lots of pictures and lots of information.

Delightful to read, informative and practical

This book is exactly what I was looking for. A perfect introduction for a novice with historical as well as practical information. I highly recommend it to anyone curious about the world above us!

Fantastic starter and reference astronomy book.

This book gave me the best basic foundation for my now avid hobby of astronomy. I frequently go back to this book for references and also use this book to teach others. It is well written with easy to understand explanations of our solar system, universe, and how to view them. The book even has star charts to guide you throughout the year to the objects of your choice.
