In the Pinnacle edition of Sixgun Duo the stories are The Gunsinger and Night Raid, and it is Night Raid which makes the book because it contains two of Haycox's greatest characters, Indigo Bowers and Joe Breedlove. I don't know how many stories he wrote with these two characters but they are as un-like as can be, and play off one another and compliment one another as only two real partners really could. Indigo tended to always believe the worst, while Joe had a "whimsicality that tempered all his actions and all his words". Their adventures are priceless, and this one is a good one. An earlier edtion of Sixgun Duo by Ace, 1965, has The Gun Singer but is paired with The Killer which can also be found in Ace's 1973 book, Starlight and Gunflame. In spite of the possibility of getting duplicate stories sometimes, these "classic" books by Ernest Haycox are well worth the money, especially if you are a fan of his and want everything published in book form by him. These short novels or stories are also a good way to get introduced to him and his style of writing; for even his novels are written in the same way--full of character inner turmoil, sometimes dark and mysterious, haunting even in some instances,as most of his characters are disallusioned, discouraged, and insecure with themselves--jaded to the world. Yet, I believe he is exceeded only by Zane Grey as a writer.
