Women in Zane Grey’s West

The Zane Grey’s West Society has been pretty much the lone voice in the last decades trying to keep Zane Grey in the public eye. For those of us who grew up in the 1950’s and 60’s we needed no help, because we already know who he is and was—the Greatest Novelist of the American West. Yet not only that he championed and wrote about many subjects he found detrimental to the country and society. He wrote about the harsh and sad treatment the soldiers returning from WWI received from both the public and the government. He wrote about the riotous times following the war—the Roaring Twenties we call it with its flappers and the lax morals of the day. He was a naturalist and conservationist who saw the destruction of the beauty of the land and its resources. Many of his novels did have women in the lead roles, and not just “damsels in distress”. This book presents several of Zane Grey’s Heroines—women who were strong, courageous, independent, beginning with his own ancestor, Betty Zane, who saved Fort Henry during one of the last battles of the American Revolution. I recommend this a place to start to get to know Zane Grey.
