Humans as Co-creators

This pocket-sized classic on creation, ecology, and the Spirit speaks to all ages. Author Dom Helder Camara, a Brazilian priest and archbishop, was an advocate for the poor and defender of human rights. He urged the faithful to apply Gospel values not only to issues of poverty and human exploitation but also to the problems that threaten our planet. The four-week series of daily meditations offers daily reflections centered on creation, the incarnation and redemption, the Holy Spirit, and the universe. One of the earliest meditations reminds us that God chose humans to be co-creators, "to complete the creation and to help nature express its full potential." Human accomplishments he sited include fire, the wheel, and nuclear energy. And bombs, chemical weapons, and biological warfare, which could destroy the earth 30 times over. This blasphemy, Camara wrote, is an urgent call for "serious and profound studies in ecology." In a later meditation, Camara wrote of organ transplants and the ability to prolong human life as further opportunities for humans to serve as co-creators, "though what is still to be achieved is not the physical renewal of the body, but renewal within ourselves."
