When she wins a scholarship competition, a young Thai village girl faces the hostility of her brother who places second and her father who feels the city school is no place for a girl. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I think that Minfong really processes a good knowledge of vocabulary and the knowledge of knowing how to express them. Dawan is a girl which I thought would give up on the thought of having a scholarship in a city initially. I never knew that she is so determined that she can actually moved her father to the positive way of looking that girls need to study further also. This a fine, good example that happens in our world every time especially in a country where women are not think important.
It is a very touching and meaningful story.

it tells us about a village called dawan who won a scholarship to be sent to the city to study. It was for the good of the village so that she could go back to the village to teach the villages on what she had learnt in advanced technology.

nice book which leads u to think of the troubles faced by different people.in this book u see the the troubles faced by not only Dawan, the leading character of the story, but also those faced by her brother and the others.....the indecisiveness that lies in everyone of us is shown here,it leads u to also think about yourself and your own actions ,those that u have taken..... the book creates much awareness on the plight of the poor and the strong discrimination against girls that is still present today. it shows the struggles and eventually shows the compassion in every person.. it leads u to think of how life should be treated and how one should live positively.........read it and enjoy........
She writes in such a moving way it grips you by the heart...

Ho Minfong is indeed a talented writer, having written such a moving book inspired no doubt by her early childhood days in Thailand. The book is indeed worth reading. The exoticism of the scene, set in Thailand, and the emotions that grip both the female protagonist and her brother, makes for a suspense-filled novel worth its weight in gold. A potentially enduring classic.
