Powerful Collection

Dennis Brutus is an inspirational poet who challenges the world to look inside their souls and help those in search of it. An amazing collection, definitely recommended to the readers who enjoy revolutionary poetry. This man is very skilled, and still writing to this day, I can't wait for the next book.

Excellent poems on aparthied South Africa

Brutus is one of the great African poets. His use of words and style of writing shows the real work of a gifted artist. Most of his poems are very symbolic and this shows how natures action is so close to mans'experience. Many a times he has been under criticism for his choice of words. He was once crticised by J.P clarke for his use of language especially in reference to white people in South Africa. He thinks Brutus sometimes insults the whites and thats not fair.Brutus has once called them "obsence albinos" and J.P Clarke objects to this. May be,and just may be Clarke is right to some extent.Dennis Brutus punches are indeed sometimes hard and harsh on the whites.Notice the cock image in "No jim-crowing cackle" in "Abolish Laughter First I say"and his lashes against the girl at the counter with "surreptitious novellete.."in "Waiting (South African Style)Non-Whites Only. The use of these compound words looks as if Brutus has gone far but you need to be in his shoes. So much deprived that he has to be economical in his choice of word. This however helps him to say more with very few words. Aman who has been arrested because of his conviction and determination to speak for his people, not because he stole. He was even shot but thanks Allah he survived.Much more the hallucination of his jail sentence on the Roben Island(as we see in his poems)could not save him from giving a harder and wilder punches. Dennis Brutus,I think is somewhat justified. The whites are "guilty" just as he is (refer. Their Behavior"
