Rival: Slow Cooking at its Best

Because this cookbook isn't available at the moment, I'll keep my review brief. This is one of the better cookbooks I own for the slow cooker. It has full color photos, a hardback binding, an easy layout with decent size type and the recipes are conveniently divided into three steps. The only drawback is that it would be nice if it were to designate the ideal size slow cooker for each recipe (I own three). When I received this cookbook as a gift, I was concerned it would simply duplicate recipes offered by my larger Rival CrockPot cookbook, "Best Loved Slow Cooker Recipes", but it has 30 recipes that set it apart. Not too many of them require alcoholic ingredients -- which I mention only because it adds to the cost -- and not too many of them require canned food items. It's not the end-all, be-all of slow cooker cookbooks -- I've got my eye on "Slow Cooker Magic" and "Fix-It And Forget-It: Big Book of 1400 Slow Cooker Recipes". However, this particular cookbook strikes a nice balance between the more exotic sounding fare and the dishes that are easy to put together on a moment's notice. Because the binding beneath the glossy hardcover is a spiral type, it lays flat and is easy to read while cooking. The large pictures also makes it among the more attractive I own. Recipes range from main courses to desserts and even beverages.
