Sylvia Thorpe has a way with both dialogue and prose, which shows in this book like all her others. An author at home in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, Sylvia Thorpe has penned novels which include buccaneers, witches, highwaymen and even England's civil war. The Silver Nightingale is one of her more light-hearted reads with the classic cold-hearted aristocrat who eventually falls for his charmingly ordinary fiancee. A little mystery arises among a motley assortment of their fellow travelers stranded by snow in a country inn, and there's also some danger, humor, and a happy ending. This novel doesn't have the darker side of Thorpe's 16th and 17th century novels, which makes it fun escapist reading. I'm a purist about dialogue and historical authenticity (at least as much as you can have in a romance!), which Thorpe does nearly as well as Georgette Heyer, though her novels - particularly her Regencies - are less densely written. If you get annoyed with Regency characters behaving like 20th century Americans (like I do), check out Sylvia Thorpe! Her books are difficult to find but well worth the effort.
