An appealing collection indeed.

Elaine Eskesen's SILK KNITS: 20 DESIGNS IN FABULOUS FIBERS tells how to use the textures and colors of silk and silk-blend yarns to maximum advantage. These yarns hold great potential and can create polished results not available with other types of knits - and even beginners can work with them. The color photos, easy projects and author introductions to each project make for an appealing collection indeed.

Not just for the lover of silk

The author loves silk and the 20 projects, which include some by other deisgners profiled at the back, all are of silk or silk blends. Each yarn is given the number of its weight so it is possible to use another yarn in that weight even though the author would probably be horrified. Projects are labeled in difficulty. She begins with a very nice intro on knitting with silk and helpful tips on using silk. Projects are arranged by season. In addition to written instructions, each has a schematic and charts if needed. The knitting is not meant to be complicated and the beginner as well as the more advanced can find some lovely items to make. My favorites are the lace shell, eyelet yoke pullover, circle vest in Noro silk garden, side to side jacket on cover, textured vest, beaded shrug, and frost flowers shawl. Sizes go from 32" to 46" but several are written much larger such as the oversized cardigan from 39" to 60" finished size. The book doesn't include how to knit information which can be found in many other books. My only complaint is that silk yarns used here are not cheap, but the knitting will be fun and they will be great to wear. The patterns are what I consider to be classics although they have been given interesting details. Book is well produced with excellent color photos and good print. Highly recommended.
