An excellent book in the classic science fiction "what-if" tradition.

In Sideshow's future America, a mutation has caused telepathy in some people, and and society is tearing itself apart. It's a fascinating look at politics and societal norms, as well as a compelling look at what science fiction does best - what ifs. I love a book that makes me think, and as I read, Sideshow made me think me about all sorts of fun things like discrimination, government, abuse of power, scapegoats, etc. It raises social issues that are just starting to be issues in today's world, and carries them to the next level, introducing fascinating, and sometimes frightening "what if this continues?" questions. Lest you think that Sideshow is only a novel of social commentary rest assured that is also has compelling, believable, fascinating characters who drive the plot and make you care - about them, and about their America. I loved Sideshow when I first read it a few years ago, and I loved it just as much just now when I reread it. It's only a shame that W.R. Thompson hasn't written other books in the same genre.
