Based on an eponymous film originally screened in 2000 at the MoMA in NY, this book documents the life and work of a young, talented and self-taught South African sculptor forced to flee his rural home - a full-sized, hand-built metal helicopter that stuck out from the background of traditional thatched huts in his village. Mbhele had made headlines in the local papers, but his neighbours, jealous of his success, destroyed his creations and his home and had him jailed.
