Wade Everett hits a home run with this 'western' story that takes place in Bonanza. A growing settlement of 6,000 with an atmosphere of lawlessness and corruption that has not gone unchecked is upset by the appointment of Adam Collier as mayor and Joe Beal as marshal. One time fire chief Adam Colier has the respect of the towns people, and his fire department runs smoothly. His moral sense of right and wrong steer him on the high ground everytime. When evidence of his friends' (Bill Frame)other activities point to him being the mastermind of crime in the town, he turns his investigative mind to the matter at hand. Murder, corruption, and a free rein for criminals seems to be the norm. Judge Waller, with the backing of Beal and Collier, starts to jail, fine, and convict criminals. Business taxes, fire regulations, and a new police force directed by Beal cleans up the town and leads to a final confrontation that can only result in the death of one man. "Shotgun Marshal" is a great book, with great writing, and is a surprisinly easy read. Wade is a top notch writer.
