April 19, 1775, British regiments from the Boston area march to Concord and Lexington in search of weapons and ammunition hidden by Colonials. The regiments are ambushed on their return. Sergeant Noland Black [Protagonist] is shot, falls unconscious, and awakes in the same place, but exactly 200 years into the future. Found by reenactors wearing red coats, Black is initially relieved, then thrown into dismay when he is confronted with the future's modernity. A lost talisman given by an unattainable love adds to his agitation. The three individuals, who find Noland, care for him and verify his origin, but keep it a secret. During his five-day sojourn in 1975, Noland is wined and dined, exposed to cultural and social changes, discoveries and inventions. He is consoled by and enamored of his female caregiver, and likewise she is of him. So, he wants to remain but remains conflicted. When he learns the results of the American Revolutionary War, his desire is to return to the past and declare the futility Great Britain has initiated. But, since his appearance is inexplicable, return would be as great a mystery. Consequently, efforts are made to integrate him into the 20th Century. But the talisman is found and when Noland touches it, he is whisked back to the past, where, what he saw and experienced in the future, establishes his destiny.
