An Excellent Guide to the Canon

As the other reviewers note, "The Sherlock Holmes Companion" by Michael and Mollie Hardwick is an excellent reader's guide to the Sherlock Holmes Canon. It provides a complete list of all characters in the stories, a selection of quotations grouped by subject, a summary of the plots of the tales (which are great memory refreshers and, thankfully, do not reveal the solutions), a joint biography of Holmes and Watson, and a biography of the "literary agent," Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The book also features many of the original illustration by Sidney Paget from "Strand Magazine." In short, this is a beautifully presented book and is written with a great affection for the Sherlock Holmes stories. When I was a child, I was thoroughly immersed in all things Sherlock Holmes, and "The Sherlock Holmes Companion" was probably my favorite secondary text. My local library had a copy, and I must have checked it out a dozen times at least. I spent many hours with this book, and it still brings back pleasant memories...

This book is a wonderful guide for a Sherlock Holmes reader. You can find anybody who is quoted in the series, even the smallest role player. The writers have carefully selected and classified the quotations as well. You can glance upon the storylines to remember what that episode was about in plots of stories.The writers Michael and Mollie Hardwick had done a great job. Definetely a book worth buying.
