From back of the book: When beautiful young American Amy van Allen arrived at the great English estate of Lord Jonathan Sherborne, she was met with white-hot fury rather than warm welcome. On her way Amy had dared spend the night at the mansion of Mr. Charles Pemberton, a man who Sherborne declared had been his late wife's lover, and had stolen the fabulous Sherborne sapphires. And now Amy went even further, when she spurred Sherborne's younger sister Olivia to rebel against the imperious lord, and to yield to the amorous entreaties of the same thoroughly detested Pemberton. Clearly it was to be open war between Amy and Lord Jonathan. But not so clear was what would happen if she fell in love with him... It was absolutely exhilarating to read a book that offered great battles of wits and words among intelligent characters as was portrayed in this book. I believe this was the best story I have read by Ms. Heath so far. Not only dialogues were clever, but the lay-out of the story and description of the scenery were all impeccably done. Well, there were probably couple of very minor flaws on heroine's characterization but they were in no danger to jeopardize rest of the book. A big thumb up!
