A Delightful Cookbook of Hors d' Oeuvres

I am always on the lookout for, always scouting around for new and interesting cookbooks, so it goes without saying when hubby Dub and I are on the road in America that I check out the thrift stores. Likewise when we're sailing in the Caribbean. Every place cruisers (people who live on sailboats) dock or anchor there seems to be a book swap nearby. You bring one it and you get to take one out. I found this book at a little grocery store in Bequia, a beautiful island which is part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This book originally came with a cassette, but that was long gone before this copy fell into my hands. Ms. O'Conner's stick is good food and good music go together. I can't dispute that as Dub and I always have music in the background when we eat. However, this review is about the book, not the music. In this delightful book Ms. O'Conner has gathered hors d' oeuvre recipes from some of San Francisco's trendy restaurants. Well, trendy back when the book was published two decades ago. I have to say the very first recipe in the book, Tea and Spice Smoked Poussins from the China Moon Cafe, looks absolutely delicious, but since poussins are baby chickens I didn't make it. I thought about doing it with a whole bird, but thought it would be too big to do in my wok. Still, I might try it with something smaller, like quail someday. Anyway it looks divine. However, I did make up the Tartaletas de Gamba (shrimp, ham and dandelion tartlets) from the Bay Wolf Restaurant Cafe and these were divine, do die for. I've also done the Crab Cakes with Jalapeno Sauce from the Carnelian Room, which is atop the Bank of America Center in San Francisco's financial district, or at least it was, maybe it still is, I don't know. I traded a John Grisham paperback for this book and I think I got the better deal. If you see a copy somewhere, pick it up, you won't be disappointed and you don't need the cassette, you can make your own music. Review submitted by Captain Katie Osborne
