What a wonderful find this book was! I have read many books which take place in India by some well known authors, Rohinton Mistry, Anita Rau Badami and Shauna Sing Baldwin, and this lesser known book was worthy of the same praise as these books. The premise is a young women and her new husband deciding to leave everything they have ever known in their upper class Parsi famillies in Bombay to go to graduate school in Eugene, Oregon. The culture shock was huge as the couple moved into "married student housing", which was basically prefab units, whereas in Bombay they lived in huge homes surrounded by servants that did all tasks. The book also traces back to the years that the main young woman was growing up and why she was so desperate to escape. This book was brought even more to life for me as I had the opportunity to listen to Hiro McIlwratih read from her book at a local bookstore the other night. She had a wonderful voice and told wonderful little stories about her writing and the history of the book, and yes some parts of the book are based on her life. Lesley
