a compelling romantic suspense with a touch of the paranormal

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques When Lexie Ayze's husband died he left her and their young son Jack penniless from the high debts Daniel had built up. In an act of desperation, Lexie turns to her Navajo in-laws for assistance. She and Jack move across the country to live on the Reservation with them until she can get back on her feet financially and mentally. She also believes it is important for Jack to learn the ways of his father's people. Anthropology professor Michael Ayze is reluctant to bring his widowed sister-in-law into the middle of a war between good and evil factions of the Navajo people. But the way of his people dictates this course of action. It certainly doesn't help matters any that six years ago when Michael met Lexie on the eve of her wedding, she stirred up feelings in him no man has any right to feel about his brother's chosen bride. He fled before his emotions could disgrace him but seeing Lexie again reminds him of everything he's buried. It quickly becomes apparent that Lexie's appearance on the Rez becomes a catalyst for the latest onslaught of battles between the evil Skinwalkers and the Navajo Brotherhood sworn to protect the people at any cost. When it becomes apparent Lexie has her own mystical gifts, her ability to see and communicate with ghosts makes circumstances grow even worse. Michael can no longer fight his attraction to Lexie, especially when she feels the same, but how can the People support a warrior medicine man who has taken up with an Anglo witch? Lexie and Michael's relationship is a complex one. He is proud and even arrogant at times where Lexie is sensitive and dedicated to her son. Then again, everyone knows opposites attract so when these two get together, sparks are bound to be flying hot and fast. Neither one can deny the depth of their attraction to each other, yet are reluctant to give in to their desires. Though the traditional Navajo way actually encourages a relationship and eventual marriage between them, neither is able to completely turn away from modern beliefs. Michael feels guilty about his attraction to Lexie, believing it interfered with him being a better brother to Dan when it was most needed. Lexie is reluctant to admit she has feelings for Michael because after her far from blissful marriage to Dan, she is none too keen on falling into the marriage trap again. Her entire dedication is to the needs and wants of little Jack. Lexie has no knowledge of the Navajo way since Dan had left the traditions behind. Through her education by Michael and his family, we are granted a deeper understanding of the religion and beliefs of the People. I love receiving these little nuggets of information throughout the story as it gives me a greater appreciation for such an intriguing culture. Old and new come to such a fascinating contrast in everyday life on the Reservation. With Shadow Warrior, Linda Conrad has once again written a compelling romantic suspense with a touch of the parano
