Have you ever had weird thoughts of intelligent rats and other animals, living in a society of their own? If you do, then this is absolutely the book for you. This book is set in modern day America, on the edge of a peaceful salt marsh at a place called Cape Cod. The main characters are three rats named Peter, Tom, and Sara. Peter is a very smart rat who studies science and chemistry, similar to his dad. He is the leader of this band. Tom is also a very intelligent rat (a little on the chubby side) and is Peters best friend. Sara is Peter's little sister, a restless girl who is very curious about the rest of the world. She likes the book, Moby Dick alot, and she analyzes it frequently. These rats are part of a big society of intelligent rats (who can speak, read, puff cigarettes, etc.) who are very interested in human science, literature, and other things that take a well developed mind to comprehend. After risking their lives to set up a radio antenna on a church steeple, the three get an emergency request from North Cape Cod. Their relatives there need insulin. Most of it was recently destroyed in a fire, so now the trio must take a three day journey there. On the way they meet many creatures, they see their first baseball game, save a human life, join a parade, and much more. The theme of this book is to get out into the world and explore it, because you never know what you might see. The meaning of the title is that the rats walk silently and unnoticed, like shadows. I thought that this authors craft was exceptionally detailed, and I enjoyed the fact that these little creatures could create such a effective society, and that they borrow, make use, and critique the human arts. I recommend this book to anyone who can appreciate a good book.

If you have ever spent any significant time on Cape Cod, you will delight in this wonderful fantasy. It amazes me how the author can make, an otherwise unpleasant rodent, into such appealing little characters. Thy literally come to life. I am buying a couple of these books for my grandchildren, who also delight in Cape Cod.
