simply mesmerizing in its mix of science, adventure, anthropology, literature and deep melancholy. "The Great Deep" displays penetrating knowledge and aching acknowledgement of lost past and future on the seas. Written before the endgame for the oceans of global warming was announced, "The Great Deep" presents a learned and wise understanding of human degredation of environment, which alone would make it indespensible reading in these troubled times if its prose wasn't damn near perfect.
