The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7, contains some of Jesus most profound and most memorable teachings. What might these teachings have mean to his disciples, and to the others who first heard them? How do they enhance our reading of the rest of the Gospel of Matthew, and how do they speak across the centuries to listeners today? How, if we pay careful attention to his words, does Jesus provide us a road map to living as God would have us live? In Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner's Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine introduces the major topics in the Sermon on the Mount, explains historical and theological contexts, and shows how the words of Jesus echo his Jewish tradition and speak forward to reach hearts and minds today. This book provides a rich and challenging learning experience for the individual reader and also makes a wonderful, six-week group study with the additional Leader Guide, DVD, and 40-day readings
If I could give thus book zero stars I would .The book was very hard to follow and seems to complicate something that really is not complicated . The author has some videos on YouTube that are more easily followed , however the book and videos are not always true to the Bible. In the book there will be several paragraphs of what could have easily been said in a few sentences . Also, the wording seemed to complicate even more so of what the author was trying to say . There are many times where a common word was substituted for a more difficult word, as if the author was trying to impress the reader with her extended vocabulary and knowledge. Also, Greek and Hebrew translations of many words were offered which was not helpful . I bought the book thinking that it would be a great study guide on the Sermon on the Mount which turned out not to the case at all. There was a lot of unnecessary fillers such as when she referenced Mick Jagger and Keith Richards . It's written like a college lecture . The author writes about meals mentioned in the gospels and states " Jesus could have been chubby " perhaps she meant it as a joke but regardless I found it in incredibly poor taste and extremely offensive.
