Being that Shapiro is much ignored, this is a fine collection. Updike's intro is important and helps the unaware, though a little, well let us say, Yanky. Shapiro didn't pull his punches, that's why he is so little known. He is a pre-(curser) to poets like James Tate, Mark Strand, Charles Simic, & Marvin Bell. They flush out what Shapiro was doing (not trying to do). A must read is the collection by Shapiro, called "Creative Glut"...it speaks to our times better than almost any poem written since the late 70's. Wish there where a lot more Karl Shapiros. In that there is not glut.
