A story of teenage angst played out on an imaginary seesaw of love and hate by a teenage boy. It is precluded by a happier time living on a mountaintop in Connecticut with his mother and sister. But by seventeen, he has quit high school and joined the military. While he waits for a ride to the train station, he reflects on the episodes in his life that has turned him away from a promising student to an indifferent one. A neighborhood boy, whose mannerism at fifteen appears delinquent in look and behavior, becomes his role model, while an older, introverted, eccentric character becomes for him the solitude and inspiration he seems to be looking for. His affair with a Jewish girl at school leads him towards the possibility of love. But they all just sequences in his life that seems to be guided by some inherited, destructive force that in the end finally tilts the seesaw of love and hate he has built inside him to an act that releases him from it.
