Pictorial Guide to Fun, Creative and Challenging Writing

Read the book just like a magazine. Seeing & Writing is packed with stunning images including cartoons, posters, news captions, studio portraits, studio arts and illustrations. The title is pretty self-explanatory. Seeing and writing: The book encourages us to see, to examine, to observe, to scrutize, to pay attention to small details and so to inspire a more complete and fun writing experience. The book also adopts pieces that leave us agape, in a way that we can re-discover how we could write about an even occurs in a nick of time as a small frog being swallowed by a bug-eater. You will be amazed at how detailed, descriptive, lively some of the selections found in the book. Re-discover our life experience, re-discover our writing. Write like we have never written before. See & Writing is truly inspiring.

Off the Beaten Path

Most textbooks that college students use are just that - textbooks. However, Seeing & Writing, a text written by Donald and Christine McQuade, puts an interesting spin on the usually dry and strictly informative.Seeing & Writing was designed to be used as a text for English composition classes - to provide writing material for young students. This book may be the first textbook that is also entertaining. As opposed to tired passages followed by questions with obvious answers, Seeing & Writing offers entertaining pieces from little-known authors, followed by questions that could have "more than one correct answer." Seeing & Writing also offers another quality that most texts, especially those for English comp classes, do not offer: a barrage of imagery. Seeing & Writing is full of colorful and interesting photographs that stimulate the student's mind and hold his attention. Christine and Donald McQuade have devised something novel.Aside from providing fresh and often humorous stories that the student might actually be interested in reading, Seeing & Writing also inspires the creative mind to write with hundreds of abstract and eye-catching photographs. If only all textbooks took such a pioneering approach and were designed to capture students' attentions, college might actually be fun.

Seeing & Writing

We live in a visual culture, surrounded by still and moving images that "speak" to us, sometimes without our knowing it. How odd it is, then, that we spend so much time with words in school, without attending more to the pictures or real scenes that catch our eyes. SEEING AND WRITING, though intended as a composition text, offers something of the education in visual literacy you probably missed. Stunning graphics--advertisements, cartoons, studio portraits, news photos, paintings--fill the pages, followed by prompts to get you to see, to think, perhaps to write your reactions. Poetry, essays, stories, fill in themes around the graphics, such as "Coming to Terms with Place," "Figuring the Body," "Constructing Race," and "Reading Icons." The last unit, for instance, features pictures and written pieces on Marilyn Monroe, Betty Crocker, and the flag. I originally ordered SEEING & WRITING to consider for a college composition class, but I had to bring it home because I kept opening it and losing myself in it in the office.
