Seducing the Enemy by Emma Darcy Harlequin Presents # 1906 - September 1997 Scandals! themed series There was nothing else Annabel could do when her twin Isabel called. Isabel was in a motel room with a man other than her husband and the man had just died from a heartattack. The man was a corrupt politician that Annabel had been about to expose in her newspaper article the next day. It only made sense for her to send Issy home and for her to take her place. She'd say she was there because of the article, which was easy to back up as there really was an article. Only the dead man's brother, Daniel looked right through her and knew there was more to her story. Weeks after, Annabel takes a vacation away to a nature resort, only to discover that the man in the next cabin in none other than Daniel, and he wants to know the truth. But it's a truth Annabel cannot share for Issy's marriage sake. The attraction between Annabel and Daniel goes much deeper than the physical. And though Annabel gives in to the physical affair that is inevitible, she mourns the loss of a relationship that she knows could have been more had she revealed her secret. This was quite different than the Presents I've read recently. There are more layers to this story than the romantic conflict between Daniel and Annabel. Daniel's strength is in his deep integrity and in the justice that truth brings. He recognizes in Annabel the woman that could be his soul mate, if only she could learn to open up and let go of all the secrets. Annabel is torn between her instincts to protect her much weaker twin and the relationship of a life time she could have with Daniel. She doesn't see a way to have both. The under lying story of the corrupt politician and the continued threat of scandal creates the suspense the fuels Annabel's fears for her fragile sister. :D
